Frequently Asked Questions about Metabolic Health

1. If I am not overweight or obese, could I still have hyperinsulinemia or be “skinny fat”?

Yes, skinny people can still have excessive visceral fat (fat around the organs that can’t be seen but is likely to be pro-inflammatory) that causes hyperinsulinemia.

2. How is your program different than places that just provide a prescription for GLP-1 meds?

We are comprehensive in our assessment, education, monitoring and support, which translates to better outcomes. We are the only local provider emphasizing the mental aspect of metabolism. The brain controls it all!

3. Will you treat any underlying metabolic dysfunction?

We will treat obesity and we will collaborate with your internist or family practitioner. We will defer treatment of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and other associated diseases to them.

4. How long will I need to be in the program to achieve good metabolic health?

That will depend on your individual variables. Some patients are able to come off the GLP-1 medications and maintain their healthy weight. Others will need to maintain a minimal and possibly intermittent dose.

5. What is “metabolic psychiatry”?

Metabolic psychiatry is a newly emerging field in Psychiatry that recognizes the inherent connections between metabolism and brain functioning and treats obesity, which is the primary  cause of metabolic dysfunction.

6. What conditions does metabolic psychiatry treat?

Metabolic psychiatry treats conditions like obesity, insulin resistance, and emotional eating as well as the associated mental illnesses like mood disorders and anxiety.

7. What treatments does metabolic psychiatry use?

Metabolic psychiatry uses uses a variety of treatments including medications, laboratory testing, personalized diets, CBT, health coaching, gut biome assessments, genetic testing, fitness and wearable technology to improve metabolic health.

8. How can metabolic psychiatry help?

Metabolic psychiatry can help patients improve their metabolic health as well as their brain functioning. When these things improve, quality of life improves.

9. How often do patients need to see a prescriber?

Patients will initially see a prescriber monthly or bimonthly. Once they have stabilized, the frequency may decrease depending on whether or not the patient continues on medication.
